4 Great Ways to Level-Up your Employees!

One of the biggest issues new start-ups face is making sure they have the best staff available to them – finding and retaining top talent is something every fledgling business needs, but how you go about that is an intimidating task.

Everyone is different and finding the right methods to ensure your staff turnover is kept at an absolute minimum is a tricky proposition. That’s why we’ve put together a list of four of the best ways to help improve your employees and help keep them loyal to your business.

Identify what motivates them

Just as with clients and customers, identifying what motivates your staff and what they want out of their job is a crucial step in making sure they can perform their job to the best of their ability. But more than that, it’s also the best way to make sure your employees are happy at work.

In the book, The Happiness Advantage, salary is not given as one of the prime motivators for happy work staff, it’s things such as knowing the company is cutting edge and feeling that your work is valued and appreciated.

Recognition of employees’ success is a major motivator and an essential step in making sure your employees feel valued and want to both stay with the company and improve. Employers should take time to give thanks to employees for work well done and even reward exceptional efforts. Positivity and encouragement from the top down is a great motivator and you, as an employer, will reap the benefits of ensuring this is engrained into your management and leadership style.

Improve their work skills

To expand upon what we just established is a prime motivator, if employees are motivated by knowing their work is valued and appreciated, making sure you employees are able to perform their job to the best of their ability at this standard is an essential step to improving your team.

Your employees may already be working at an acceptable level, but there is always room to improve and making sure that your staff are given the opportunity to get better is vitally important.

Start by identifying certifications and online resources that they can use to get better, there are plenty of these available for free that can be shared among the relevant teams. If you really want to improve particular roles, investing in training for individuals is the way to go. Not only does this make the employee feel valued and invested in, but you are also enhancing the knowledge of your workforce and filling potential skill gaps, future proofing your start-up.

So, your staff will be able to get better at they’re jobs and be happier for it as well. A perfect combo!

Improve their non-work skills

All work and no play makes employees demotivated and unenthused.  Improvement of skills shouldn’t be limited to that required solely for their role. If you really want to enrich your employees it can benefit you to support them in developing non-work-related skills. For example, if your employee is based in a village outside of Preston and has to commute on the bus for work or relies on lifts or publics transport to get to client meetings, helping them to acquire a driving license will mean they are much more able to get to work when unforeseen problems arise.

As an employer you can help by allowing them to take lessons during work time or you could even arrange it for them by finding driving instructors in Preston allowing them to learn on the roads near work, giving them the confidence needed to drive to work as soon as they pass their test.

Your employee gets a useful life skill and you have greater opportunity for their work, plus major boss points. It’s another win-win.

Establish a positive work environment

One of the biggest things to remember for any employer is to make sure you develop a good work culture, especially a start-up as you get a chance to influence this right from the start.

A positive work environment is one of the most important things for any employee, having a bad one is one of the biggest factors in high employee turnover.

Addressing the motivational point first and making sure employees feel valued is a great first step in building a positive work environment, but regularly asking your employees how they feel and ways to improve the culture is vital to keeping everyone engaged and happy.

Although work is a place to do just that, many people spend most of their waking day, week, month and year at work, so it is important that they feel comfortable and happy while they are there.

Arrange social outings and team building activities, these don’t need to be every week but once a month or quarter will allow your staff to let their hair down and connect with their colleagues outside of a rigid professional environment.

Ensure tea and coffee is stocked up at all times and the odd piece of fresh fruit or chocolate biscuit on offer couldn’t hurt morale.

It is important to remember that little gestures go a long way with employees and in the end you are the one that will benefit from these actions the most.
