4 Ways To Get What You Want From Your Employees

Expanding a start-up company and bringing more people on board is a big step for most small companies. When you go from running your company yourself to managing a team of staff, you need to open your mind to the possibility of change. People don’t all work in the same way, with some working styles being vastly different than others. It is up to you as a business leader to hire people who will gel well together and do the best they can for your business.

It’s important for you as an employer to get the best out of the people who work for you, and there are many strategies that you can employ for your people to do this. Hiring new employees isn’t just about maximising their resume and their experience, but working out what new employees can do for you. Other than utilising the help of outside training companies, there are other things that you can do to get the best out of the people you hire. We’ve put together some tips for you so that you can effectively manage your people so that you can have a mutually beneficial working relationship:

  1. Set Goals. Your employees need to prioritize their workload, and you need to give them something to aim for. Regardless of how people work and what style they use, people always need a goal to hit to feel like they have something to work for. Goals that you set should always be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic and Time bound) and you should make sure the goals mean something. If cash bonuses are the way to rev the engine in your employees, then cash bonuses should be on offer. Above all? Don’t forget to ASK your people what they want!
  2. Plan Ahead. No one likes to be micromanaged, but you need to meticulously plan the goals for your employees, and also plan the road to achieving those goals. You can’t give an end game without explaining how they can make their play. Sit together and work together toward success. Don’t forget, if they hit their goal, so do you!
  3. Practice Empowerment. You can set a lucrative goal but if you don’t motivate people to get there, they never will. Every person who hits a goal while they are working will hit a goal for growth and development in your company. It’s the best way to maximise the skills of the people you have brought onto the team.
  4. Assess Frequently. Successful companies have successful employees and the people you hire want to be a success! The role that they have taken on should be one they can look upon as one that matters and means something. By sitting down together frequently, you can keep the people who work for you on track and working effectively toward their goal.

Empowering the people in your company to work harder is the way to get the best out of them. Don’t treat them like they are replaceable; good employees need to feel valued.
