A Coat Of Arms For Your Business

It might seem a bit of a stretch to compare your new business to a knight in shining armour riding into battle. If you know your history, you will know that a battle was an extremely chaotic affair. Once you were in the thick of it, it was difficult to tell who was who. Obviously you wouldn’t want to be hacking at someone on your side. Therefore, you needed some way of identifying yourself. A nice easy visual clue as to who you were. A coat of arms was born and a flag was raised. Life was made simpler by the use of a sign.

Hundreds of years later, signs are still playing their part. Our business and trading may have changed in many respects, but one thing remains an absolute truth. Signs and visual means of identification are still the most effective way of letting your customers know where and who you are. This is especially true if you are the new kid on the block. Start-ups need signs. Here is why.

Signs help people find you.

It sounds obvious and it is obvious. That is the point! But it doesn’t hurt to point it out. Any marketplace gathers because that is where customers come. Your sign tells people, who don’t know you from anyone else, where to come. They.guide people to you.

You have opened up the dialogue with some marketing or even a cool promotion. When that customer turns up your sign, flag or coat of arms is like a big arrow flashing. Here I am. This is where you need to go.

Signs give you a sense of place.

A sense of place is like coming home. It is something that becomes familiar to us. It is a place of sanctuary in a wild wood. Lost alone and on the street, and feeling a little hungry, you are either searching on your smartphone or simply looking around. Where am I? The thing you most want to see right now is a sign of familiarity.

A sign of arousal

Well, it’s true. A sign arouses interest. This is from people who aren’t even looking for you. They are just wandering around looking for something. Their philosophy might be, we’ll know it when we find it. What it will be is entirely down to your sign. It could be anything, big or small. The bigger, the better you might think, but then there are different types of signs for different reasons.

Business signs come in all shapes and sizes. Check them out. A slightly interesting statistic is that maybe 50% of new customers find a new business this way. This kind of information is especially relevant to those businesses who serve a locality or an area. This can be applied to virtual retail, just as well.

When we see a new sign, we try and make sense of it. We have a need to understand it’s message. We are curious and a curious customer is very welcome.

The message is the message.

Get it right, and get it out there, Put it on a tattoo, put it on a T shirt, a leaflet anything you like but have it on a sign. What can’t be put on a sign these days? Nothing. Everything is possible.

What you want in a sign.

Simple. No one wants to hang around in a suit of armour trying to work it out. This is why it will be a good idea to be colourful. Depending on where your sign is, might dictate the size. You could after all have several.

A sign could be your next best friend. Relatively inexpensive, tireless and relentlessly working for you. Even when you are fast asleep dreaming of being a knight in shining armour
