British business leaders that start-ups can learn from

If you are starting your own business, the experience of others who have gone before you in the world of business leadership can provide huge inspiration. Business leaders can not only provide inspiration to entrepreneurs in respect of the field they work in, but also serve as an example of how business leadership impacts positively on the broader community.

Business leadership is a source of inspiration in the first instance because strong business leaders make a success of what they do – their businesses make money and create jobs. However, strong business leaders are also admired for the other qualities they bring; these include honesty, hard work, good communication, intelligence and trustworthiness. Some of these qualities tie in with each other. For example, good communication implies being able to listen as well as talk, and if you listen to what customers and employees are telling you, then you form business relationships based on honesty, and you establish a reputation as someone who can be trusted. Honesty and trustworthiness will bring you a long way in business, provided that you have a product or service that is in demand and will remain in demand. Honesty and trustworthiness are also qualities that have the ability to cement an entrepreneur’s reputation in the wider community, giving them the foundation on which to build something of lasting value.

A businessman that people working in a variety of industries can draw an example from is Max Mosley, former president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the governing body that oversees Formula One and other motorsports. A one-time amateur racing driver, Mosley transitioned into the business side of motorsport, becoming a successful racing team owner with March Engineering, a platform that allowed him to assume leadership roles in motorsport governance.  As head of the FIA, Mosley championed the introduction of various safety features in Formula One, and because of his background in the sport, people were willing to listen to him and take his views on board. Max Mosley’s TV appearances show a person in command of his brief, with the authority to speak on issues relating to motorsport governance. Mosley is an example of a leader bringing his skills and experience to bear on something broader than simply his own business interests.

In addition, business leadership can be leveraged as a tool to assist the broader community in various initiatives. You will have seen the example of business leaders across the globe making wide-ranging contributions to society, using their own business success to drive change in many sectors. The involvement of business leaders in humanitarian and other causes inspires others to become involved. A further benefit is that the skills learnt by business leaders can be applied to causes in need of guidance and inspiration.

As the owner of a start-up, you need all the inspiration you can get, and business leaders can point the way in terms of gaining momentum and positioning your business for success.
