Creating the perfect team for a technology startup

Thanks to the dramatic evolution of the world of technology, and consumer technology in particular, we have witnessed a remarkable change to the business world, with more and more people taking a bold step and establishing their own technology startup. Very often, all it takes is an idea. This is the starting point and the foundation on which a successful organisation is built. It needs more than this, however, to actually make it happen, and having the right people on board willing to pitch in together and make a group effort is absolutely critical.

Three-step process

At the most fundamental level, there are three basic steps to creating a strong team:

  1. Imagine your perfect team, and turn this into a design. Consider the technical expertise you will require people to have in order to turn your idea into a reality. Make sure you also think about the non-technical skills and support you will need to have at your disposal, such as people management and office logistics. These are easy to forget, but no less essential as they will provide your technical experts with the tools to carry out their roles. Finally, think about character attributes as well, taking into account the sort of working environment you are looking to generate. People need to share a vision and values to operate effectively together.
  1. Enlist the help of IT Recruitment Specialists as they will be instrumental in getting you the right people to match the role profiles you developed in the first step. They will be able to give you advice about the right places to advertise, and will have extensive contacts of people in the industry, who can help with headhunting if necessary. Finally, they can provide support on the actual recruitment process, supporting you throughout interviews and selection to make sure that your employee requirements are met.
  1. This is perhaps the step that is most often neglected, despite it being as important as the first two. Once you have a group of individuals in place, you must form a plan to make sure they work effectively as a team. Consider the training required to keep skills sharp and up to date, make sure you have effective means of internal communication, and make personal and professional development a priority. As well as being the best way of being confident that you have the most skilled team possible, this is also a great way of retaining your best employees.

Preparing for future success

While it has arguably never been more popular to go ahead with your own startup, some of the facts and figures around this area, and technology startups in particular, can make for sobering reading. With that in mind, it is essential to be prepared and plan carefully for every step of the way. An absolute priority must be getting the right people in the right places, as this, combined with a strong product or idea, will help to lay the foundation for a bright and successful future.
