How to Boost your Business in 2012
Sometimes it can be hard to get a handle on how efficiently your business is running, even when turnover is high, and especially when it is not. As every business owner knows it is not just about how successful the front end of your business is performing, for a business to be at its best everything has to be running at 100%. So what tools are available to the perceptive business owner to keep every department in tip top condition?
Training
This may seem obvious, and modern incarnations of training may even provoke groans, but never has it been more important. Systems and processes of the modern business are getting more sophisticated every day, and used correctly they make everyone’s life easier, but the right training is imperative or these systems can be nothing but a hindrance.
Of course, there is a plethora of courses available to staff now, but one that should not be underrated is the KPI system. Key Performance Indicators are markers to track the performance of a company. Most businesses have an informal version of this in place but the problem many managers come up against is identifying the correct management metrics and ending up with huge amounts of data that is not a real reflection of performance. Getting a correct, well informed KPI system in place will illuminate how the business is doing, highlighting the good bits and more importantly the areas that need work.
The BSC system is also coming to the fore in 2012, this is the Balanced Scorecard and works to clarify priorities and articulate their business plan concisely. The clear creation of a goal can be invaluable for businesses but it is down to the management to have the clear sighted ability to do this. Training management staff in the BSC system gives them a process to achieve this.
Consulting
Consultants have been much maligned in recent times, and it is true that they can muddy the waters of an already confused business if you do not know your objectives or you have chosen the wrong consultant for your company. However if you hire a savvy consultant, and you have clear idea of what you’d like to get out of their time with you it can be an invaluable experience. A great consultancy service can offer a great range of tools from helping company’s benefit from their data to providing companies with a concise strategy and helping them execute it in the most cost effective way possible.
Keep up to Date
It can be easy to get into a rut with company processes, but things are changing all the time as research advances. So don’t allow your company to slip behind the times, keep up to date by reading the literature published on the matter and keeping abreast with advancements in your specific field. There is a wealth of information out there now for every business type imaginable and it’s important to narrow it down to what’s relevant to you. The same applies for data from your own company, whilst gathering it is invaluable, if you’re drowning in it and it has no real bearing on your company performance it is rendered instantly worthless; so find what data works for you and focus solely on that.
