The Challenge of Finding the Right Person for the Role

When you run a business, you have to hire people. When the business is small and every decision matters, this is a big challenge. But what are the main challenges you will face? And how can they be overcome? Read on to find out.

Balancing Ability and Potential

Just because a candidate is not yet the finished article, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they should be ruled out. Young people who are just started out might be raw and unformed, and that means they can have great potential. It’s initially much cheaper to hire young or inexperienced people who can then be developed and moulded as they do the job for your company. If you can get the balance right between a candidate that knows the basics but also shows potential, you could be onto a winner. This is what you should be aiming for. To uncover candidates with potential, you’ll need to get to know their inclinations and basic skills.

Matching the Personality to the Job

Finding the right person for a role is not just about what they can do though. It’s also about their personality and how they will fit into your team. It’s great if you can find someone who is skilled and qualified. But it’s not so great if that person has no idea of how to conduct himself in your workplace. If he or she causes rifts in the team, they could end up doing more harm than good. So, think about the qualities that make your existing team work well together. And then look for those qualities when you are interviewing candidates. You often get an instinctual feeling for who will fit in and who won’t.

Finding a Person with the Right Technical Skills

Skills are still very important though. And you need to make sure that the person you are hiring has the right grounding and will be able to do the job properly. You should make sure they have any qualifications and ask to see proof if these are essential to their ability to do the job safely. You could also ask them to carry out a few tasks on a trial basis. This allows you to see them doing the job that they might eventually be doing. There is no better way to find out whether or not a person has the right technical skills that you’re looking for. And for hard to fill healthcare roles, you can find skills candidates from recruitment websites

Asking the Right Questions During the Interview
Asking the right questions at the interview stage is not always as easy as a lot of people imagine. The questions have to elicit the kinds of answers that you’re looking for. When you’re asking the wrong questions, it will be very difficult for you to find the right person. The questions should be open-ended because this gives the candidates the chance to talk and give rounded answers. And try not to put candidates on the spot too much. Of course, you need to press them a little. But the aim of the interview is not to make them feel uncomfortable; it’s to get to know them better.
