Top Tips For Keeping Keeping Mobile Workers Secure

The need for mobility has seen a significant increase in mobile workers in recent years. Many businesses now have travelling employees that work from different locations across the world; creating an increased security risk for businesses. Workers accessing company data from outside the office affect the security of your servers and also their devices. Luckily there are many thing you can do to keep you and your workers secure whilst working on the move. Take a look at these top tips for keeping mobile workers secure.

Keep away from unsecure public WiFi networks

Free WiFi networks in hotels and restaurants may seem great. However they are one of the easiest ways for hackers to get access your data and are a common cause of security problems. Being unsecure means that anyone can access them and once they are on the same network as you they can use software to find out what data you are transmitting across the network. If you are in a hotel it is a good idea to use cabled internet when available instead of wireless. Switching to cabled internet will ensure more security for your data.

Use remote wiping for mobile devices

If you lose a mobile device or laptop then there is a chance of someone getting hold of the data, even if it is secure. The data you have on the device is often more valuable than the device itself and therefore setting up remote wiping is essential to make sure it does not get into the wrong hands. There are many cost-effective applications that can do this for you. When you realise your device is lost you can go online and choose to lock or wipe the device, ensuring your data is protected.

Disk encryption for laptops

If your work laptop falls into the wrong hands then a password is often not enough. Hackers will be able to find other ways of getting access to the data on the hard drive. Disk encryption means that if anyone gets access to your data then they will not be able to use it or understand it as it will all be encrypted. The downside of disk encryption is that it can often affect the performance of the laptop. However with high-powered laptops these days, a slight performance drop is worth it to keep your data secure.

Use secure passwords

Your device password is going to be the first line of defence against anyone trying to gain access, giving you time to realise. A good strong password will ensure that a potential intruder can not get quick access to your data.  If you are using a laptop then as well as a user account password, you should also look at other areas to password. Your BIOS can be password to protect anyone trying to boot your device from other locations. There is also a lot of security software available to protect individual programs.
