4 simple ways to reduce spam comments

If you’re using WordPress for your blog then you are probably aware of spam comments. For me, once i have logged into the control panel i have to spend 5 minutes removing spam comments. However by just making some changes to your blog and using a few plugins you can stop nearly all of the spam comments on your blog. Here are four of the most effective ways that i have found to remove spam comments.

reCAPTCHA

A CAPTCHA is what you see when you are asked to enter the letters that appear in the box. By using reCAPTCHA you can guarantee that it is a human visitor to your blog that has left the comment. Without using a CAPTCHA then you are allowing bots to come onto your blog and fill in the comment box automatically and start sending you Spam comments. A CAPTCHA not only stops bots leaving comments;but also people who are repeatedly coming onto your website to leave comments as it means that they need to take time to keep entering the CAPTCHA code.

Using other comment boxes

Many websites now use third-party comment systems such as disqus and Facebook comments.  Spam comments usually seem to keep away from these as you need to have some sort of account to comment. In my experience i have found that these can sometimes slow your page down waiting for them to load but then are well worth a try to see if they actually reduce spam comments. You may also see an increase in comments if you are using the Facebook comment system as it saves time if you are already logged in to Facebook.

say no to DoFollow

Many bloggers may use DoFollow so that they can try to increase their blogs popularity as well as comments. However DoFollow blogs are a prime target for spammers as they get the advantage of building a backlink from your blog. Make sure that you use NoFollow on your blog to try to avoid spam comments. On the other hand though DoFollow does have the advantages of bringing more traffic and valuable comments to your blog so it depends on your personal circumstances with spam comments.

Remove “your website” field

This is a very simple way to avoid a lot of spam comments. The main reason of spam comments is so that these people can promote their own websites and try to build backlinks. By removing the website field then people are not going to waste their time commenting on your blog if they are not going to get a backlink from you.Nevertheless by doing this, spammers will try to leave their URL in their comment so this is how you will know that they are spammers and then you can block their IP Address by using one of the IP banning plugins available for WordPress.
