How To Choose The Right Office Space When Your Business Grows

The nerve centre of your business is the office. Creating a dedicated workspace can help you and your staff to put your professional heads on for the day. As your business flourishes, you’ll take on more clients and more staff. A crowded office isn’t fun for anyone. Before you know it you’ll be ready to expand your business by moving to a brand new office. We’ve taken four bonuses of moving and outlined how you can make the most of your expanding business and what to consider when finding new premises.

Choose a bigger and better office

Expanding your business means getting the space you need and the space you deserve. As your business continues to evolve you’ll have to add more members to your team. Make the most of the opportunity to take on a space that allows everyone to have their spacious area. Don’t forget to learn from the mistakes you made with the last place. If you’re moving, it means the office wasn’t perfect, so be sure to practice healthy caution as you view all the available options. Rather than just considering what you simply need from the office, think about what you want from a cool office space. Ask yourself about:

  • Catering – do you want a separate kitchen area or communal lunch space?
  • Meeting rooms – now that you have the opportunity to host them in your own premises, will you need a room to meet clients in?.
  • Sections – is it worth having designated areas for different departments? For example, would it be beneficial for the company Managers/Directors to have their own office?

Consider going paperless

Having paper filing might not have seemed like a big deal when you started the company. Now that you’re growing, the amount of space that filing cabinets and shelves take up is probably growing exponentially. With the numerous cloud based storage facilities, such as Google Drive and private servers, you might want to consider going paperless. Not only will you be able to get rid of/ slim down the number of bulky file storage units, you’ll also be able to work from anywhere. If you need further persuasion for paperless, think of the exchange in space you could make. By eliminating rows upon rows of documentation, you could afford to create a social or relaxing room for staff or maybe even somewhere to have your Monday morning meetings in comfort.

Clear out the excess junk

Anything that looks beaten up or won’t fit into your brand new, clean and tidy office should be ditched. This means upgrading those basic desk chairs to something more comfortable and maneuverable. Get a clearance company and a cleaner to return your old office to the blank slate it was before. Clearance specialist, Clearance Solutions say that ‘a good clearance company will be able to remove and responsibly dispose of your unwanted office equipment, for example broken computers and shelves’, leaving your old workspace clear and tidy. They’ll also be able to help you with anything re-sellable, diminishing the overall cost of your move.

Sell on your old furniture

A good clearance company will be able to advise you on how the cost of your move can be brought down by various other factors. They can find the value in your old, worn desk. Just because you don’t want them doesn’t mean someone else can’t use them. The money saved by the sale can then be shaved off your moving costs. Remember that reusing is even better than recycling. Your clearance company should be able to provide you with details of where the used furniture will be sold onto or where you’re cleared items have been sent. Often this may be to other countries where the government can buy in the cheap furniture and put them to good use.

Be Green

Following the paper trail of your reused and recycled items means you can be assured they aren’t being dumped in a landfill. Businesses often underestimate how much work a great clearance company is willing to do. Far too many poor removal companies will just be charging you to take your stuff to the dump.

Re-organise your desk layout

After you’ve cleared out, cleaned up and are signed into your new home, there’s one last consideration. Think about reorganising the layout of your office to suit your team’s needs. You can take advantage of this fresh start by creating a layout for your office to change the team working dynamics. It’s easy to encourage more collaborative work: simply group your teams and place their desks side by side. Equally, if the heads of the company/department want to be able to keep an eye on the team and address them as a group, position the main desk at a wall, with the other desks around them. Business expansion is one of the big steps your company will take and hopefully keep taking for years to come. Learn from each move and improve on the last. Remember that you will be spending a lot of time in this office so be comfortable and enjoy it.
