Revitalise Your Business Safety

Making sure that everyone that comes to your place of work is safe is one of the most important jobs for any employer. In fact, it is probably the most important jobs, But keeping on top of your workplace safety can be a chore. This is especially true if accidents are rare or have never happened. Trust me, it’s always best to stay on top of your health and safety plan. You never know when an accident might happen and you could be liable if you’ve been in any way negligent.

So now is as good a time as any to revamp your workplace health and safety to protect you and your employees.

Make Sure Your Health And Safety Policy Is Up To Date

I bet quite a few things have changed in your business since you wrote your first health and safety policy. If you’ve grown, moved or expanded your operation, your health and safety measures may need to change.

One of the best ways to do this is to consult with your colleagues. Don’t forget that your health and safety circumstances are unique to your business. And don’t forget that your employees are experts in knowing the risks to which they’re exposed. However, if you’ve got a high-risk business it might be worth consulting with third party experts, like Plansafe. Because you’re working there every day, it’s often quite easy for risks to melt away into the background not be noticed. Third party companies are often much better equipped to assess risk in the workplace.

Keep Your Injury Log In Mind

In most countries it’s a legal requirement to keep a log of all injuries suffered at work (however minor). So making sure your safety log is safe and up to date is essential to protect you from costly litigation.

But keeping an injury log is also an important way to identify hazards. Perhaps there is a particular warehouse door that’s causing problems. Or maybe employees are injuring themselves by carrying heavy objects. With a log these risks can be tracked and addressed.

Ensure First Aid

What’s your first-aid kit looking like these days? Unloved I’d guess. And that’s a good thing. It probably hasn’t been used. But one day it might be needed and so keeping it well stocked is imperative.

Also, make sure you still have a first-aider on your site. With employees coming and going, it’s hard to keep track of who is and is not qualified in this regard.

Keep Employees Trained

One way of making sure that accidents don’t happen is to keep employees trained. This means training up any new recruits or any visiting contractors about how to be safe at work. Also, you may want to refresh anybody who has recently taken on more responsibility.

Don’t forget, any instruction you give needs to be easy to understand and relevant to the job. If that’s moving heavy boxes, then some training on how to lift well would be appropriate.

Lastly, make sure that everyone is still on the same page for how to follow any emergency procedures.
